So your cruise ship is docking at Galataport Istanbul — and you have one day to experience one of the world's greatest cities. Where do you start? What can you realistically see? And how do you make sure you're back on board before departure?
We've been running Istanbul shore excursions for over 26 years. This is our definitive guide.
Built in 537 AD, Hagia Sophia is the single most important landmark in Istanbul. A cathedral for nearly 1,000 years, then a mosque, then a museum, and now a mosque again — its layered history is unlike anything else in the world.
Cruise tip: Lines can be long. Always book a tour with skip-the-line tickets included.
Just a 2-minute walk from Hagia Sophia sits the Sultan Ahmed Mosque, known worldwide as the Blue Mosque for its stunning interior tilework. It's one of the few mosques in the world with six minarets.
Cruise tip: It's free to enter, but dress code applies. A good guide will prepare you in advance.
Home to sultans for nearly 400 years, Topkapi Palace sits on a hilltop overlooking the Bosphorus and houses one of the world's greatest collections of imperial treasures — including the famous Spoonmaker's Diamond.
Cruise tip: Topkapi takes time. If you're short on hours, prioritize the Harem and the Treasury.
Right between Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque, the Hippodrome was once the social center of Byzantine Constantinople. The Egyptian Obelisk, the Serpentine Column and the German Fountain still stand here today — and it costs nothing to visit.
Over 4,000 shops spread across 61 covered streets. Carpets, spices, jewelry, leather goods, ceramics — if you want to bring something home from Istanbul, this is the place.
Cruise tip: You don't have to buy anything. Just walking through is an experience. Budget at least 45 minutes.
Sailing the Bosphorus is the best way to understand Istanbul's geography — the city literally straddles Europe and Asia. On the water you'll see Dolmabahce Palace, Ortakoy Mosque, the Maiden's Tower and the two iconic suspension bridges.
Cruise tip: Some of our Istanbul shore excursion packages include a Bosphorus cruise as part of the full-day program.
Smaller and more manageable than the Grand Bazaar, the Spice Bazaar is packed with Turkish tea, lokum (Turkish delight), saffron, dried fruits and hand-painted ceramics. It's one of the most photogenic spots in the city.
Just steps from Hagia Sophia, this underground Byzantine cistern is one of Istanbul's most atmospheric and underrated sites. 336 marble columns rise from still water in the dark — and the famous Medusa heads wait in the far corner.
Cruise tip: It's cool underground even in summer — a welcome break from the heat.
Dating back to 1348, Galata Tower rises 67 meters above the Galata neighborhood and offers 360° panoramic views of Istanbul, the Golden Horn and the Bosphorus. The perfect photo stop.
No shore excursion is complete without sitting down to real Turkish food — not a tourist buffet, but a proper local restaurant. Think lamb kebab, fresh meze, pide bread and strong Turkish tea to finish.
Our guides know exactly where to take you.
Public transport from Galataport is possible — but you lose 45–60 minutes each way navigating trams, crowds and language barriers. A private shore excursion means:
